OU in Review: Bye Week Brings Big Wins for Sooners

Christian Ponder

Despite not playing yesterday, Oklahoma seemingly came out as one of the biggest winners of an action-packed day.

The Sooners' already impressive body of work through five games looked all the better after all was said and done.

Air Force rolled to a comfortable 22-point win over Colorado State (which unfortunately included a backdoor cover by the Rams). Cincinnati blasted Miami (OH), 45-3, hinting that the Bearcats may be rounding into form heading into conference play.

Most importantly, Florida State took Miami (FL) to the woodshed last night at Jimmy Buffett Stadium. That's the same group of Seminoles that the Sooners demolished by 30 points in the second week of the year. At this point, FSU appears to be the best team in the ACC.

On the year, that runs the combined records of OU's opponents, excluding head-to-head results against OU, to 17-6.

The Sooners aren't making a ton of headway with the pollsters, though, checking in at No. 6 in the AP and USA Today rankings. The computers, on the other hand, are a little bit higher on the Sooners:

Interestingly, as our buddy Blue Horseshoe told us, OU was probably the consensus No. 1 with the machines prior to this weekend. Why the drop in the computers? Probably the rise of LSU, which has become the new darlings of the power rankings.

Going forward, OU still has a chance to make a few statements with games at Missouri, at Oklahoma State and a possible date with Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game. However, the drop in the computer rankings this week should give Sooner Nation some cause for concern.

Let's say there are three or four undefeated teams at the end of the season. If OU can win out, which seems like about a 30-70 proposition right now, the Sooners may have to rely on voters to give them their props late in the year.

The same voters who are most impressed by Ohio State's weekly shellacking of the lightweight du jour.

Yikes.
